I think most photographers would say that their style is constantly evolving. I know that photography, for me, feels new and fresh with each photo session because every family is different. I love photographing family moments- and I try to avoid repeating “poses that work” so that I am truly capturing families as they are.
With that said, this newborn session was a first for me… Typically, I travel very lightly to my sessions- no props, noise makers, costume changes, etc. Except for my newborn sessions. For the past few years, I compared myself to the photographers who put babies in adorable poses, with cute knit hats, and felt like I should be one of them. After all, I admired their work, so why shouldn’t I do it too? And, although newborn sessions were stressful to me, I couldn’t figure out why- I didn’t realize that bringing a van load of items (giant bean bag, backdrops, space heaters, knit hats, etc) just wasn’t fitting my style. So, gradually I have been moving towards a lifestyle approach of newborn photography that matches that of my other sessions. And, the more natural my sessions became, the more comfortable I was doing them. For this session, I opted to travel with nothing but my camera… no bean bag, no props, etc. Ok, I lied a little bit- I still had everything in the car, just in case I needed them, but I started without them and didn’t look back. And, I couldn’t be any more thrilled with the results. These images are, to me, exactly what I want my newborn sessions to be- natural, laid-back lifestyle photography, capturing families as they are.
