5 Top Tips for a Great Headshot

Headshots. We love to hate them and I get it, it’s not easy finding the right one, planning for it, being in a picture…but if when you compare your headshot to others as you scroll through LinkedIn you feel like you are stuck in the 80s, it may be time for a refresher. Getting a new headshot and feeling like a rockstar doesn’t have to be painful and can be fun!

Here are four questions to help you determine if you are due for a new headshot!

  1. Is your headshot current? You are as gorgeous now as you were a few years ago, let’s keep your headshot current.
  2. Does it look like a professional took your photo or is it obvious you cropped out other people for your Linkedin photo?  We can see your cousin’s elbow!
  3. Is the background of your photo appropriate to what you do? As much as we love to see them, leave your family vacation photos (or at that bar) for Facebook and Instagram
  4. Is the wardrobe in your photo appropriate for your clients (if applicable) and what you do? I’m not judging, but it makes a difference.

If you answered no to any of the questions above, you need a new headshot!

And now that you know you will be getting new photos, here are some tips to make it a breeze!

  • Make sure you still look like you! Whether you do it yourself or hire a makeup and hair professional, make sure they enhance your natural look instead of changing the way you look.
  • A great headshot doesn’t have to be super formal, a great photo is one that shows real emotion and connection!

  • You don’t have to be on a solid color backdrop. Allow yourself to try outdoors, your office or a place that is meaningful to what you do!

  • Wrinkles in clothes show, so get rid of them before your session!
  • Shoes only matter if you are doing a full-body headshot
  • Your headshot doesn’t need to be boring and taken just straight-on. You can spice it up and change positions and angles as long as it fits your personality and your job/clients.
  • And the most important thing is that you have fun!

Headshots are a great way to introduce yourself to the world and make a great first impression. I can’t wait to take yours!
